Lupita Nyong’o Speech On Empowerment Makes Her The Perfect Candidate For X-Men Character Storm? Petitioners Ask Marvel To ‘Respect The Demands Of Consumers’

Lupita Nyong'o speech at the Oscars 2014 as well as the Essence Black Women Hollywood Luncheon inspired many to continue dreaming regardless of their skin color. Since the '12 Years a Slave' actress has unknowingly empowered many, netizens are now urging Marvel to give the Nyong'o a pivotal role - Storm.

The petition is officially hosted on Change.org. Such petition asks producers of the 'X-Men' franchise to enlist Lupita Nyong'o as the newest Storm.

"This is important because listening to the demands of your consumer base means more than your own personal casting choices. She has the accent, the look, and the acting chops to play Storm as the comic book intended.  Please kindly take this into consideration and respect the demand of Marvel consumers and fans of this amazing franchise.  This petition was started based on the overwhelming responses to my tweet," reads the petition's description.

Nearly 900 supporters have already signed the petition in a span of one week. Petitioners have several reasons why they think Nyong'o will be apt for the role which is likewise played by Halle Berry:

"Storm was miscast from day one and watered down the X-Men franchise for me a little. As a former comic book collector, I know the true person/persona of Ororo Munroe. She was a homeless African pickpocket when Charles Xavier found her via Cerebro. She has ALWAYS been dark, beautiful, and strong - not light and barely able to fight like Halle Berry (she even excelled at hand to hand combat when she temporarily lost her powers). Her image was so unmistakably African, so Ms. Berry was a disappointment in that role. But now we have Lupita. She is PERFECT. She is Storm personified. If they TRULY want the Black American dollar - they'll whisk that young lady into the nearest X-Men outfit and start shooting IMMEDIATELY. I can't speak for anyone else, but it certainly means the difference in whether I go to the box office or NOT," says Brooklyn-based Andre Jones.

Afiya Augustine believes 'X-Men' can use diversity in its story: "Because it's about time we get more variety in our women in color both on-screen AND in sci-fi/fantasy roles that'll encourage more girls of color to embrace their heritage, ethnicity, in a fun, entertaining movie!"

Faith Matunda thinks Nyong'o will inspire more people if she'll be given the role: "Images have the power to change and inspire. To the producers and casting directors alike, do not merely inspire. Be inspirational. Lupita Nyong'o represents everything that embodies the role of Storm, to not ask and consider her for the role, would be a great disservice to the character as well as its fans and followers!"

Do you think Lupita Nyong'o will give justice to Storm's character?
