'Frozen' Movie Sequel: Disney Princess Saga Breaks $1 Billion! No Spin-Off Shorts On Blu-Ray Release; Are They Making A Full Feature Already?

The Disney movie "Frozen" has been hailed as the best they have produced in years. No less than the Academy agrees, as it won Best Animated Film and Best Original Song. They have also reached another milestone at the box office.

The movie about sisters Anna and Elsa which was loosely based on "The Snow Queen" Fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen has crossed $ 1 billion in worldwide gross box office sales. Disney's CEO Bob Iger himself has proclaimed that "Frozen" will surpass "Toy Story 3" at the top.

From Playbill: Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed March 18 at the company's annual shareholders meeting that "Frozen" would surpass 'Toy Story 3,' which was produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.

As previously reported, the film has grossed over $1 billion worldwide. 'Toy Story 3' generated $1.06 billion at the box office, and "Frozen" currently stands at $1.03 billion. "

Disney is now on a Renaissance since it bought Pixar. Not only did they turn their possible biggest rival into their own property, they also applied the creative formula that Pixar has used to their own movies.

From the NY Post, Tom McLean, editor of Animation magazine stated: "Disney Animation is on the rise. 'The Lion King' was the last renaissance they had. People have been talking about Pixar and the disappointment in them."

To further relish their triumph, Disney also released the "Frozen" Blu-ray which also set records. From Variety: "The animated hit sold 3.2 million Blu-ray and DVD discs in its first day of release, the studio said Wednesday. That figure includes pre-sales, and puts it on track to become one of the biggest sellers on home video in a decade."

Despite the absence of newly made special features, the Blu-Ray Collector's Edition is flying off the shelves. Movies.com wrote: "It's strange that there's barely 30 minutes of special features on this disc - especially since they're calling it a collector's edition - so don't be surprised when Disney finds a way to double-dip release this in the near future." There were reports that some short films starring Olaf the Snowman and Sven The Reindeer, but they were not part of the collection.

It is now speculated that Disney may have revised its plans. The next film by Disney animation is "Big Hero 6" which is a partnership with Marvel and features the characters of the same name. A "Frozen" sequel or full length spin-off might be in the offing after that.
