George R. R. Martin Surprised By ‘Game Of Thrones’ 2 Season Renewal By HBO? Still Mum About Release Date For “The Winds of Winter” As He Broke The Internet Twice!

George R. R. Martin admitted to being surprised by the renewal of "Game of Thrones" by HBO for "unprecedented" two seasons, while the author is still coy about the release date for latest book "Winds of Winter" even if the release of the new chapter broke the Internet. Twice!

On HBO renewing "Game of Thrones" for fifth season, George R. R. Martin wrote in his blog site: "Great news. But hardly surprising. I mean, it wasn't official, but everyone and his brother pretty well knew that we would get a fast renewal for season five."

However, HBO also renewed "Game of Thrones" for a sixth season, "and that one is surprising."

"I don't think even David and Dan (series creators) suspected that was coming. I certainly did not. HBO never orders more than one season at a time, not in recent memory. So this is pretty unprecedented. And pretty great."

HBO enjoyed its best numbers during the "Game of Thrones" season 4 debut since the "Soprano" finale, TV Week reported, as about 6.6 million viewers watched the premier.

"Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming, called the series 'a phenomenon like no other' in the renewal announcement Tuesday, praising series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for 'their dazzling storytelling,'" TV Week added.

While George R. R. Martin's latest posts never mentioned about the release date for "Winds of Winter," he did bemusedly apologize on April 6 because he "broke the internet AGAIN."

"Sorry about that. I'm not to blame this time, it was HBO GO... and all you people who have HBO GO and keep trying to watch the episodes on your computers instead of on your television sets," he wrote, referring to HBO's online streaming service.

On March 27, he said the upload of the new sample chapter for "The Winds of Winter" created so much traffic that the servers crashed.

"Anyway, it seems to be easing off some. And we are looking at ways to increase capacity," he said.
