'Dougie McBuckets' Acquired By Chicago Bulls In NBA Draft 2014! College Basketball's Leading Scorer Will Complement Carmelo Anthony!

The NBA Draft 2014 has commenced, and the Top 9 picks were not traded by the teams that drafted them. For now. One trade that surprised some observers was the Chicago Bulls trading for Doug McDermott, aka "Dougie McBuckets" from Creighton.

The Bulls locked their target prospect via trade. The details from ESPN Chicago:

"The Chicago Bulls got their man, trading their two first-round picks for sharp-shooting forward Doug McDermott, who was taken 11th by the Denver Nuggets.

A league source confirmed the deal with ESPN Chicago.

The Bulls were high on the Creighton star all season, scouting him a number of times. They were also looking for a trade partner for the 16th and 19th picks to shave money off next year's salary cap.

Is that a good sign for the Bulls' free agent hopes this summer?

While the Bulls pursue free agent Carmelo Anthony, getting McDermott addresses one of the Bulls' biggest needs: Shooting and scoring."

McDermott was named National College Player of the Year after scoring a record 3150 points in his career. While most teams would frown upon players who stay too long in college, the Bulls have a definite role groomed for McDermott. They don't need him to be athletic or to be a great defender-which is great because according to his player assessment, that is his main weakness:

"College basketball's national player of the year tallied more than 3,000 points in his career via numerous catch-and-shoot 3s or high- and low-post baskets set up by his ability to use screens to free himself without the ball. McDermott's offensive game should translate fine in the NBA even against taller, longer, more athletic defenders. His biggest issue for his new coaches could be figuring out who he should guard."

The Bulls vaunted coach Tim Thibodeau can always figure out a way to defend. What they need is a scorer-and acquiring McDermott would make Mike Dunleavy and Kirk Hinrich dispensable to save more salary cap space.

Teams are slowly making the moves to snag the free agents. The Bulls are obviously building their roster for Carmelo Anthony's arrival.
