"True Detective" was neither a love story nor a feminist-friendly show. They had two lead actors and no lead actress. They had two of the best, and it seemed inevitable that they would both get a nod, but which of them would actually win?

First off, some interesting tidbits on the show from Matthew McConaughey's interview with Rolling Stone:

Show creator Nic Pizzolatto wanted Matthew McConaughey as Martin Hart. But when he ended up as Rustin Cohle, he immediately suggested Woody Harrelson as Mart because they had a weird relationship with each other:

"Woody and I have always done comedy together. As Woody puts it: He hits the ball to me, I hit it back harder, he hits it back harder than I hit it to him, and we volley back and forth. That's part of the beauty of us, and that's part of the beauty of our friendship. But this is about opposition. This is about not being on each other's frequency."

For a show that dark, they need to turn to humor just to survive:

"I didn't know we were going to get that much humor out of it. Some people go, 'What's so damn funny?' I go, 'I don't know, man. Maybe it's my sense of humor.' I find how these two go back and forth with each other hilarious."

The reigning Academy Award Best Actor is actually a cinch to take another Best Actor award. Some early predictions:

Newsday: "..both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson -- the series' leads -- scored best actor nominations. That was a bit of a surprise, in that only McConaughey was considered an absolute lock. McConaughey is, by the way, almost certainly the favorite to win going into the August ceremony."

Fansided: "McConaughey's performance as Rust Cohle went above and beyond anything we saw on television this year and he's far and away the leader to win the award."

More predictions will be released, but the outcome would be the same. Woody's performance as Marty is award worthy, but McConaughey  just blew out any opposition, including his partner.
