Los Angeles Lakers News: Veteran Forward Pau Gasol Leaning Towards Bulls Deal, What Does It Mean For A Rebuilding Lakers Team?

After allegedly losing Carmelo Anthony in this year's free agency, one of the top Los Angeles Lakers news today is its acquisition of Linsanity star Jeremy Lin.

While Lin could charge up a depleted backcourt that sees a returning Kobe Bryant from injury and an aging Steve Nash, the Lakers still need to get back one of its best pieces to at least have a shot at playing deep in the playoffs.

And so their next aim is to re-sign veteran forward Pau Gasol to a two or three year deal.

However, that didn't work out for the Lakers after Gasol both didn't accept the $23 million offer for two years, nor the $29 million contract for three years.

Apparently, Gasol is closely considering to move to the Windy City in Chicago according to reports by Andrian Wojnarowski if Yahoo Sports. And in a report by TNT's David Aldridge, the deal could be done today.

In this situation, Los Angeles can still get something out of the Bulls if Gasol indeed decides he wanted to be with Derrick Rose. A sign and trade deal between the Lakers and the Bulls could help both parties. Los Angeles should get a number of supporting stars or even Carlos Boozer, though the latter is highly unlikely as per reports.

Once the deal is done, expect the Chicago Bulls to be an instant contender with its primary offensive player Derrick Rose suiting up again at the start of the season. Gasol would be his usual self in the midrange and post, while Joakim Noah should guard the paint and get offensive boards.

However, the question remains for the Lakers in this deal. What should they do? They would have to admit the fact that they are far from getting deep into the playoffs, if they manage to reach it, and even farther from becoming a real championship contender.
