Bose SoundLink Mini Review: Compact Speaker Offers Small Size, Huge Kick for $200; Is It Worth It?

Bose SoundLink Mini review: With one look, we can immediately tell that the Bose SoundLink Mini Speaker is a cut above the rest. This sleek, compact wireless Bluetooth speaker assures that with its small size, and very costly price tag, it can produce high-quality sound.

This 1.5-lbs. compact speaker sports a unibody aluminum body enclosure that surrounds the two small drivers and front and back radiators. Compared to other speakers of its same size that have all-plastic bodies, the Bose SoundLink Mini Speaker feels sturdier and more solid, yet clean and sleek.

With or without its desktop charging cradle, the speaker can be directly plugged in with an AC adapter. The device, however, cannot be charged via USB. This makes the AC adapter a must every time you charge.

The SoundLink Mini has fairly simple and clearly labelled buttons that are easy to use. Like the larger SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II, is designed for every user who simply loves to enjoy quality music without the complicated ergonomics.

Like all Bluetooth speakers, the Mini can easily stream audio wirelessly from any smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC, or audio player that has a Bluetooth feature. It can remember up to six devices. Once your device has paired with the speaker before, the two will automatically connect next time whenever their Bluetooth functions are open and in range.

The biggest flaw of this speaker is the lack of a speakerphone, like Bose’s SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II. This is too bad considering that the Mini can is an ideal speaker for offices. In fact, it can even fill a medium-sized room for up to seven or eight hours. The speaker has a three-hour recharging time.

In terms of performance, CNET.com commented, “Well, while it just can't deliver the performance of a larger speaker, for what it is -- and its tiny size -- it sounds very good.”

“Overall, the sound signature is somewhat laid-back and forgiving; sound is a bit creamier. The bass goes pretty deep, but it doesn't sound incredibly tight or punchy. All in all, however, you come away with the sense that Bose eked out about as much as it could from a speaker this size,” the website added.

Retailing at $200, is definitely a compact find. It sports a quality design and streams an even better sound. The only question is, will you cough up more bucks for a smaller and better audio experience?
