‘Fantastic Four' Reboot Will End Comic Book Movie Era? Critics Already Wary Of The Film Before It's Completed!

The "Fantastic Four" movies of 2004-2005 really left such a bad taste in comic book movie fans that it almost ended the trend. If the reboot follows the path of its predecessor, then it could actually finish the job.

The popularity of the genre is at its peak, and its even safe to say that each movie is riding off the popularity of each other. This year, the three major comic book movies (all of them sequels) by Marvel, Sony and Fox respectively all garnered at least $ 700 million (data from boxofficemojo.com). The proximity of their release did not kill each movie's chances to succeed at the box office, on the contrary, it actually insured it.

However, box-office success does not translate into critical success, and viewers are bombarded by opinions not just of the professional critics but also their fellow moviegoers through social media.

The reception to Fantastic Four is lukewarm, and the website Io9 listed some suggestions for the Reboot, based on the website's fan base. Already, the reboot is pursuing a different direction:

"Don't film the origin story" - Actually, they changed the origin story and they are filming it now.

"The Fantastic Four is a family first and foremost (alliteration!), and they need to feel like it - all of them."

The reboot already dismantled the canon of Sue and Johnny Storm as one of them will be adopted. Rumor is that they just want to give the role to Michael B. Jordan. They are also following the precedent set by "The Amazing Spider Man" reboot wherein it's a flashback to their younger days, which bring up another point by io9:

"Don't Include the Reed-Sue Courtship." This is a direction that director Josh Trank seems to be treading.

The Motley Fool has aired its concern on how irresponsible comic book movies could bring the credibility of the genre in question. Fantastic Four was the main target:

"In this genre, the four horsemen of the apocalypse might arrive in the form of Mr. Fantastic, the Thing, the Invisible Woman, and the Human Torch -- the members of the Fantastic Four."

Strong words. But why would this happen?

"At the end of the day, though, superhero fatigue is this genre's gravest danger. And as more studios try to craft "megafranchises," the level of risk will only intensify. Anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a bright future, but for the sake of all other comic book movies to come, The Fantastic Four needs to get it right because eventually, audiences might stop paying for garbage.

If that happens, and trust is lost between filmmakers and their fans, the comic book movie craze could be over ... for good."

The challenge is set for Josh Trank and Fox. June 19, 2015 is the release date.
