Sony Xperia Z Ultra Review: Specs of Giant Smartphone Incl. 6.4” Display, Snapdragon 800 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB Memory; Does Bigger Mobile Mean Better Quality?

Sony Xperia Z Ultra review: Sony’s 6.4-inch giant mobile sports a 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage (extendable up to 64 GB), Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS, and an 8-Megapixel rear camera, powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor —fairly well specs for an average smartphone. But for this giant, Sony could have done better.

We are still at the trend where the leading smartphones equate to bigger screens. And Sony steps up the game by releasing a 6.4-inch mobile to match the Samsung Galaxy Mega’s size and the Galaxy Note 3’s specs: the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

With a dimension of 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5 mm, the Xperia Z Ultra has a water and dust proof body that weighs 212 grams. Judging from its size and weight, critics are even saying that the handset is even bordering near the tablet form. In your hand, it feels quite similar like the Nexus 7 model. In terms of design, its all black glass body gives a more premium finish.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra’s main advantage is definitely its screen. With a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, or a pixel density of 344 ppi, this mobile is perfect if you are after a bigger viewing experience. It only downfall is, of course, its lack of portability. Some critics are saying, however, that its color is slightly washed out.

Powered by a Qualcomm MSM8274 or MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset and run by an Android 4.2 Jelly Bean (now upgradable to 4.4.4 KitKat), the Xperia Z Ultra’s performance is still at par.

The biggest problem that this giant mobile has encountered is the quality of its camera. The primary camera is 8 MP and has an autofocus function, while its secondary camera is 2 MP. Its video capability is 1080p at 30 fps. Its camera is definitely not outstanding, but it could have been fairly well for a mobile—if only it had a flash, or an LED light.

Its Li-Ion 3050 mAh battery can live up to 16 hours of talk time or 120 hours of music play, according to reports.
With all of the specs given, we can see that the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is not as ultimate or grand as it sounds. Still, if you are after a huge display, then this handset can still be an option.
