Tizen OS News 2014: Samsung’s Mobile Platform Strategy Continues To Be In Trouble 3 Years Now; No Smartphone W/ OS Up To Now

Tizen OS news 2014: Samsung’s mobile operating system, which was supposed to be the third OS, competing with the dominant Google and Apple platforms, continues to be in trouble until now. After three years, there has not been a single smartphone bearing the Tizen OS in the market.

According to Business Korea, the launch event of the Tizen OS-powered “Samsung Z” has been canceled. It was supposed to be unveiled on July 10 in Russia. It’s the third time a Tizen OS smartphone release date was canceled after last year and another for January of this year.

Two years ago, the South Korean tech giant has formed the “Tizen Union” with 12 companies including Intel, Huawei, and NTT DoCoMo. The move was rooted in the idea that companies representing each country would do something good together.

The multinational union announced specific developments at the Mobile World Congress, which was held in Barcelona, Spain February. A Samsung Electronics executive, Hong Won-pyo, said that the company will concentrating on developing the Tizen OS platform and will aim to release Tizen phones this year, to be unveiled by Orange Telecom and NTT DoCoMo.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2, however, was launched with the Tizen OS, but it’s not considered a mobile device.

Though there have been a lot of rumors about Tizen OS smartphones, none has yet to appear. Business Korea notes that some other partners gave up developing or delayed creating Tizen products due to low market demand potential.

“The Japanese market is big enough to accept a third smartphone OS, after Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. It is not decided when to release Tizen phones,” NTT DoCoMO said in January, Business Korea reported.

The number of new mobile platforms is only expected to continue to increase, because aside from iOS and Android, Microsoft also has their Windows Phone platform and Mozilla has the Firefox OS, the handsets bearing it already available.

The Tizen OS then has little time to prove itself and Samsung and its partners would hope that it could be as popular as the galaxy of handsets it has delivered.
