A new report claims that upcoming Windows Phones in 2014 could spell the end of Nokia's other phones, particularly its feature and Asha lineups.

According to a report from The Verge, an internal memo from Microsoft's phone and business head Jo Harlow mentioned that the shift of Nokia will slowly move away from feature phones, and its Asha lineup, and would soon focus only on upcoming Windows Phones for 2014 and beyond. 

In the internal memo seen by The Verge, support for existing Nokia devices which do not run the WP platform would end in the next 18 months. 

"This means there will be no new features or updates to services on any mobile phones platform as a result of these plans," says Harlow. 

The Microsoft phone and business head also mentioned the shift of Nokia from a steady provider of quality hardware phones, to a more software-oriented manufacturer especially that it is now teaming with Microsoft for the development of WP 8.1 handsets. 

"Whereas successful hardware was the goal at Nokia; delighting our customers with Microsoft platforms, services, and applications through our hardware is our goal at Microsoft", mentions Harlow in the internal letter.  

For Nokia fans who have loved its feature phone lineup since the early 2000s, this is certainly sad news which only means their well-loved manufacturer would soon fade in the shadows of Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform. 

An earlier report claims that Microsoft is slowly phasing out the Nokia brand name as shown by an alleged upcoming Nokia device with the branding "by Microsoft" immediately below it. 

As far as Microsoft's future plans are concerned, this is a good move in order to minimize confusion as to who really is in charge when it comes to mobile development. But for Nokia fans, it could spell the doom of a more than a decade long dynasty in the mobile market.
