K-Pop Review: DMTN - Safety Zone

Dalmatian has made their comeback this year! Everyone party! Ok, done? No? Ok - I'll let you have minute.

Well, since their last comeback the name of the group was given new format. Don't worry it's still sounds the same way yet now DMTN (acronym for Desire.Motivation.Timing.Now) shows more growth since their late 2010 debut. Also the 5-member group are also under a new company, 2Works Entertainment.

The men of Dalmatian have transformed and evolved even further since their powerful comeback back in May 2012. Their single for 2012 is the song "Safety Zone" really enhances their transformation from "E.R." The only comment I can say for the single (overall), is that it's not as dynamic as "E.R."

This single showcases more vocals and there isn't a satisfactory amount of line distribution.

As a suggestion, a good powerful rap sequence could be added at the 2:21 mark. Really tying the song together at the climatic part, giving a nice edgy element.

Lyrically, the idea of a 'Safety Zone' or rather 'safe zone' is that place where the girl is suppose to feel protected.

Reading the message of the single, it seems that the story is that the girl is placed in dangerous areas. For one, on a bridge, one step further it's impossible to hold her again and it tells the guy that he failed what he promised to do.

"Safety Zone" isn't as dark and oxblood toned in terms of the video. But I see that in the production of the storyline; it lacks much structure, flow and important details.

So really watching the video (with the english subtitles into consideration) it kind of makes sense.

So from the first 20 seconds of the video that fast-forwards the entirely from start to end.

Don't be bored when you see the guys slowly walking in very beautiful venues (yet that's what happening majority here) [0:15-1:02]. In a split second [0:49] we are introduced to the leading lady that, in the lyrics, the guys wants to protect and embrace fearing of losing her existence.

During the scenes when DMTN are in that club, Dongrim see her figure in the midst of the club. Yet, since she was just a figment of his imagination she just disappears in the next frame [1:08]. Suddenly snapping into his senses he leaves; running to her "rescue." When he arrives to the abandoned warehouse, the girl appears bind to a chair being the damsel in distress archetype [1:37].

Between these two scenes, there was lack of visual information of how he knows of her location or how she ended up in that situation. 'Was she kidnapped? Did she fall into a trap? Did he get a ransom notice to confront her captors?'

Powered by his heroic drive and emotions, Dongrim charges to his rescue failing miserably from the numbers of the battle [1:43 - 1:46].

Being the friend that he is, Daniel decided to aid Dongrim in his aid. [2:41] At this point of the video towards near the end, this is the highlight with the fighting scenes performed by Daniel. Now for my complaint. There's five members in DMTN, and only Daniel goes to help out Dongrim, who is losing in his fight. That's nice teamwork.

Now for the girl. During the fight, Dongrim's imagination takes role into this again. The chair that she was bounded to, became empty. Showing that she was never there and she's gone from the world. [2:40]

DMTN unfortunately has a comeback stage postposed. Due to member, Daniel was reported with a leg injury from participation of the MBC Idol Star Olympics with bandmate Simon.

Daniel, please have a speedy and attentive recovery so your fans can watch you perform! Until then, DMTN, I wish that you will have a strong comeback.
