K-Pop Retro Rewind: H.O.T - 'Candy'

The first Rewind is H.O.T "Candy"

Former H.O.T member Tony Ahn has been in the news a lot lately after word of his relationship with Girl's Day member Hyeri was made public last month.

New fans of K-Pop probably don't remember H.O.T (High-five of Teenagers), but the 90's boy band opened doors for and influenced many of the idol groups of today.

Their first hit single, "Candy" was the second from H.O.T's debut album We Hate All Kinds of Violence which was released in September 1996.

The album's initial release ignited controversy when other groups filed lawsuits against the group for plagiarism. Despite the rocky start, the fun and poppy "Candy" was a major success for the original idol group.

The video shows the five members dancing around an amusement park in colorful oversized costumes. They interact with the camera and show off their cute, outgoing personalities. Because of this fact, almost immediately H.O.T had a huge fan following especially among teenage girls in South Korea.

Although the group disbanded in 2001, the trailblazers are still respected in today's K-Pop music scene for the influence they had on Korean pop music. From matching outfits to choreographed dance moves to attractive looks and personalities, it is easy to see elements of H.O.T in the hottest groups of today.
