Review: Shinhwa Shows They've Still Got It With Catchy New Single 'This Love'

Sometimes it's okay if you've heard the different components of a song; they can still be reconstructed into something new and striking.

To quote the old cliché, the whole of Shinhwa's new single "This Love" is greater than the sum of its parts.

Taken individually, the drum beat, keyboard and even vocal hook for the first single off of Shinhwa's 11th album "The Classic" are nothing you haven't heard in a dance club at one in the morning.

Yet the way the producer of "This Love" throws them together creates an interesting and hooky piece of pop.

That's not to say the songwriting is uninventive.

The vocal hooks in "This Love," delivered with biting sincerity by the men of Shinhwa, are solid and memorable. The main keyboard riff anchors the song well.

There is nothing earthshattering or cutting edge about the way the song is constructed, but that's okay.

The song comes across the speakers like a Backstreet Boys song from 1997.

Whatever your reaction is to that last sentence, is a good gauge of what your reaction to Shinhwa's new single will be.

The video is a throwback to that era as well, although music video directors in the genre have made few major developments in style, so that is barely noticeable.

Considering all six members of the group, Eric, Lee Min Woo, Kim Dong Wan, Shin Hye Sung, Jun Jin and Andy are all in their 30s, the video for "This Love" looks pretty close to that of any current boy band.

Other than the close-ups, there is little to give away the K-pop idol group's 15 years in the game, which is probably intentional.

Yet the guys appear as ready to deliver the goods as ever.

The members appear to be in peak physical condition and have the moves to match any young upstart on the boy band circuit.

The one unfortunate choice the producers and songwriters of "This Love" made was the inclusion of English phrases in the song when the singers seem to struggle with the language.

Broken phrases such as "like satellite and shooting stars," come across as forced and unnecessary.

The listener doesn't need to speak Korea to pick up on the passion in Shinhwa's singing.

It is too bad Shinhwa couldn't have let the music speak for itself.
