VIXX Comeback With 'Hyde': Dark Imagery Sends Shock Waves Through The K-Pop Universe

A year after their debut, rookie group VIXX has returned to the K-Pop scene with a new look and a powerful new single.

On May 20, the six-member idol group released their mini-album, hyde, as well as the music video for the lead single of the same name.

The gothic-themed imagery shows the members transformed into an interpretation of the literary Mr. Hyde, the evil personality of Dr. Jekyll. The video shows the members as dark angel figures with villainous sensuality and is a nice follow-up to their third single "On and On" released earlier this year.

The previous single portrayed the six members, N, Leo, Hongbin, Ken, Ravi, and Hyuk, as love-struck vampires.

The latest single is an electronic-pop track that is catchy enough as it is. However, the Korean Media Board had some serious issues with the "disturbing" imagery in the video and have given it an 'R' rating, citing creepy crawly critters like snakes and tarantulas and even the makeup worn by the members. Despite being a bit disappointed by the decision, VIXX will keep the video as it and continue with promotional activities as originally planned.

Promotions for "hyde" began May 20 with an anniversary party at the UNIQLO-AX Hall in Seoul where they first performed the song live for fans. VIXX plans to continue promotions for the song by making the music show rounds, starting first with M! Countdown on May 23.

The new EP contains five tracks total that display the versatility of the group. The songs range from the hard-hitting "Light Me Up" to the sweet ballad "Love Letter" and also includes a syth-pop track "Chaos" and another, more upbeat love song, "You're Mine."

Even though they are still relatively new to the music scene, even before VIXX's debut they had a significant fan following as all six members were featured as contestants on Mydol, Mnet's reality show. They were later seen in Brian Joo's music video for "Let This Die" and label mate Seo In Guk's "Shake It Up."

VIXX made their official debut last May with the song "Super Hero" and have already performed overseas in the US at the Otakon Convention in Batimore, Maryland last summer.
