Mnet was recently under fire for their alleged discrimination against idols and for favoring actors. Following these claims, Dispatch has released more information concerning the unfair treatment idols were given. Keep on reading to learn more.
Previously, Mnet was slammed for making idols wait in their cars yet giving actors and actresses their own private waiting rooms, along with a curtain for privacy and their name on each room. Idols were seen waiting inside their cars or talking with other idols outside of their cars. They were also seen wearing heavy-duty padding jackets, as it is winter in South Korea.
Following the backlash they received, Mnet released a statement to news outlet CBS No Cut News. The broadcasting company explained that though they had wanted to give everyone their own private waiting area, they were unable to accommodate everyone due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. They went on to say that as a music awards ceremony, they have no reason to be biased against idols.
They further stated that the building in Paju that was used as a venue was under construction at the time. Mnet explained that they set up a small waiting area for artists before they took the stage and said that idols waited in their cars and approached the venue in order of their appearance. Because of this, they were able to spend some time in the waiting area before going on stage.
They also informed the fans that catering was provided for both idols and artists. The actors were also using the "I-LAND" set as a waiting area, saying that they were given their own waiting area since actors had to rehearse their lines as hosts on the day itself. The idols, however, had pre-recorded all their performance. They also say that actors have a smaller staff team, which makes it easier to social distance.
However, more alarming information concerning the treatment idols received has been revealed.
After talking with some unnamed representatives from various entertainment companies, Dispatch confirmed that idols were not given any waiting rooms or dressings rooms. Instead, they waited in their cars in the parking lot. Only two idols groups were given a proper waiting room.
It was further revealed that the idols who were forced to wait in their cars had to use outdoor portable toilets instead of the restroom in the venue.
Dispatch revealed that some idols chose to rent out accommodations in nearby areas to wait in. Numerous representatives confessed that their idols have bad backs due to the amount of time they spend dancing and exercising, so having to sit and wait in cars for long periods of time is especially tough on them. Because of that, they chose to rent rooms to be comfortable instead.
It was further revealed that the actors and the two unknown groups who were given their own waiting rooms were allowed access to catering in the venue. The idols who were waiting outside in their cars, however, were informed that they could use the cafeteria inside the building they were using.
Instead of making use of the cafeteria, however, most companies let their artists eat in their cars, ordering in burgers or bringing pre-packed lunch boxes. Dispatch reported that none of the idols were able to make use of the catering services provided, despite how Mnet claimed catering was allowed for both actors and idols.
