IVE Members Except ONE Receive Backlash Over Their Cover of BLACKPINK's 'Forever Young'— Here’s Why

On March 3, IVE appeared on the Japanese program "IDOL VS IDOL." While there, members Liz, Jang Wonyoung and Gaeul performed BLACKPINK's 2018 b-sidetrack "Forever Young."

IVE has received criticism when covering other K-pop groups' songs in the past. From vocals to expressions, the members have received their fair share of backlash over their performance. This stage is no different, with only one member receiving praise from viewers.
IVE Liz Praised for Cover of BLACKPINK's 'Forever Young'
Out of the three members who performed, Liz occupies the spotlight with her stable voice. Due to Liz's vocal ability, she balanced out the team from start to finish. She was praised for singing the words clearly and for her sweet tone.

The IVE member was also complimented for her youthful vibe that perfectly matched the song. Unlike Gaeul and Jang Wonyoung, who appeared to lose their breath while singing, Liz maintained her breathing so that she could sing the whole song.
Some comments concerning Liz in this cover read, "Wow, Liz has a really good voice. I hope she receives more opportunities to shine."

While Liz received praise, her co-members were criticized. While Gaeul and Jang Wonyoung performed the low parts well, they would appear to lose their voices in the middle of their lines.

People claimed that they would only hear the backing track and not their vocals at every beginning and end of a new line.
Jang Wonyoung shined with her visuals but drew criticism once more for her expressions. People stated that her expressions were repetitive, and her body movements did not match the vibrant song. Additionally, her overall vibe and cuteness did not match the BLACKPINK track.

Due to their performance, some people joked that Gaeul and Jang Wonyoung were like backing vocals for Liz.
Some comments concerning Gaeul and Jang Wonyoung read, "I didn't even notice Gaeul. I couldn't hear her, and her screen time was so short."
"'Forever Young' has such an energetic dance, but Jang Wonyoung cares too much about her image."
"Seeing Jang Wonyoung try to sing it is so painful."
