South Korea Gives 'Barbie' Movie the Cold Shoulder Over Feminist Themes

V's admiration of the film's message quickly caught netizens' close attention, because in South Korea, "Barbie" didn't become a box office hit due to its feminist themes.

According to South Korean women's rights activist Shim Haein, she stated the movie's aim of heavily involving woman-centered topics is still considered as taboo in the country and has led to a turnoff for many Korean cinema goers.

She also added how "feminism" can leave an ick to many individuals in Korea just by its word alone. Shim Haein continued that these certain people are not willing to accept or oppose the patriarchal structure that rooted Korea's society for a long time.

The activist stated:

"Women might be hesitant to go and watch the film. The fear of being labelled as a feminist in South Korea is real.

The word 'feminism' is considered dirty to a lot of Korean people, and these people are unwilling to acknowledge and confront the deeply rooted patriarchy that has fueled society for so long."
