Animated Korean Movie “The Fake” Gets an Oscar-Nomination Nod, Limited Screening in Los Angeles

South Korea's animated movie, "The Fake" just landed an Oscar nomination and will be shown for a limited time in Los Angeles. The movie began screening on November 15th, and will be showing for only a week at the CGV Cinemas.

This animated movie is a masterpiece from its creator. After receiving rave reviews at the 2013 Busan International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and AFI Fest, the prestigious Academy Awards (Oscars) has also taken notice of the movie, even though it was made in a cartoon like set up, the core message of this movie is worth seeing.

The director of the movie is Yeon Sango-ho who characterized the animation film as a suspense/thriller. Yeon said it is "a controversial exploration of blind faith and the distorted beliefs that define good and evil." Meaningful, deep and relatable for a suspense/thriller, and displays the humanity always accoladed in South Korean films and dramas.

The story goes like this: A small rural village got news that they will be flooded to make way for a dam. Worried about the life that is in store for them when this flooding comes, the villagers ask assistance from their church and leaders who made a promise that there will be relocation sites for them. Unfortunately, an ex-convict Min-chul discovered about the corruption being manifested by church leaders and even politicians. After revealing this to the authority and the people, instead of trusting him, he was being accused of working for the devil. Who would trust an ex-convict like him, right? But Min-chul doesn't stop there as he wanted to unveil all the corruption that the leaders are hiding from its people.

Interesting and timely, isn't it? No wonder it gets international attention. Its message and the issue it raises is universal.
