Gaon Chart Dreams of National Billboard for K-Pop

1st Gaon Chart K-pop Awards concluded with the attendance of many popular artists and fans.

As it aims to become a national chart in Korea similar to Billboard the winners of each category was a big interest for many as it led many hot issues online before and after the ceremony.

Why are fans and music lovers so entrusting of Billboard chart? It's because Billboard chart is regarded as the top official representing mainstream music industry around the world, factoring in airplay as well as music sales in all relevant formats. It's a great honor for any artists to be listed on the chart.

Gaon Chart was established in 2009 with the vision of becoming an official national chart that will bring in further developments to K-Pop music industry. As the vision is to spread K-Pop music around the globe it has garnered large support from government ministry of culture and tourism.

The chart is ranked based on domestic artists' sales, international sales and combined overall sales in weekly, monthly and year-end format.

As it focuses mostly on songs and albums, many noticed the invitation of the music industry staff such as producers, composers, stylists, and technicians allowing them to be noticed for their work beyond just the artists themselves.

As part of an effort to bridge the communication of K-Pop to other countries the Chairman of Oricon Chart was invited to present the Oricon Special Award. Another note was to award an acclaimed international artist such as Maroon5.

'1st Gaon Chart K-Pop Award' reflected the change of music industry format, as the popularity of online music listeners are growing listening to individual song rather than a full album has lead the award to be given out based on quarter and month.

Taking the first step forward is important just as to remember the first motive. It will interesting to keep an eye out for Gaon Chart as they make way to become the national chart representing K-Pop to the world.
