Hip Hop in Seoul: A Review of 'The Cry Hip Hop Fiesta 2013' feat Block B, M.I.B and Mad Clown

On Sunday, November 17 around 1000 fans crammed into a ballroom in Seoul to attend The Cry Hip Hop Fiesta. The performers were, in order, Mad Clown, M.I.B, and Block B.

After watching the reactions of the night, it is safe to say that most of those in attendance were there just for Block B. I personally went because of Block B. Before the show I had heard 1 Mad Clown song and had been infuriated by an M.I.B performance (explanation to follow), so I wasn't expecting much. Yet I came out a fan of Mad Clown, a huge fan of M.I.B, and feeling slightly disappointed in Block B's 'Hip Hop' performance.

The night started off with Mad Clown performing solo before being joined by a friend/ label mate Justhis. As much as I admire Mad Clown's skills, his time on stage wouldn't have been nearly as entertaining if Justhis wasn't there. Not to mention it provided ample time for duo rapping, which sounded awesome. One thing that I loved about Mad Clown was how he seemed really quiet and reserved until he started rapping, at which point everyone was entranced. Justhis didn't have quite the same stage presence while performing, but he made up for it with annoying his "hyung" and being generally a little goofy during their talks. I may not buy a Justhis Common Cold CD after this, but I am leaning towards a Mad Clown album.

Next up were M.I.B- Most Incredible Busters. Before the show, I only knew M.I.B from their most recent song Men In Black. I saw them during a prerecording and was lucky enough to be seated at just the right height that their lights blinded me almost the whole performance. Needless to say I wasn't a fan. But as soon as this group got on that stage, they owned it. They didn't own it as a K-pop group, they owned it as a hip hop group. Well, 5zic, Cream, and SIMS owned it as hip hop rappers, Kangnam owned it as a vocalist. Interesting side note- I immediately felt that Kangnam was part Japanese. With his current look, he seems to have stepped out of a live action anime. Also, I thought he was the youngest while he is actually 3 months older than me. Fun facts!

During their entire cut, you could tell they were a hip hop group. There was no sugar coating it and everyone was getting into their performance. Even the song that I didn't like, Men In Black, had me jumping along. I was a little disappointed when they were leaving the stage, but I definitely see more M.I.B in my future.

At last up was Block B. Out of all 3 performances at The Cry, Block B was the least hip hop and the most K-pop. I felt as though I was at a K-pop concert the entire time. Sure, they sang their songs that everyone knew, and yes, the part where they drenched each other in water at the end was entertaining, but it wasn't hip hop. In my opinion, the most fitting song they performed that night was No Joke. Not that I'm not happy they were there, because I was. As was everyone else pushing towards the stage trying to get closer to them.  I just feel they should have tailored their set list a tiny bit more to fit the feel of the Festival/ Fiesta a little more.
