Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: ELF Brunhilda Eya On Why Super Junior Will Always Be In Her Heart

NAME: Brunhilda Eya

AGE: 23

BORN: Yaounde, Cameroon in west Central Africa

CURRENT HOME: Washington, DC

STATUS: Graduate student at University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Md.

INTRO TO K-POP: "Actually it was K-drama that got me into K-pop," Eya explained. "I watched the Korean drama 'Shut Up Flower Boy Band' and there was a remarkable young man named L, who was great with the guitar and also had amazing singing skills. So, I looked him up. I found out he was a K-pop idol from the boy band Infinite. At first, it was weird listening to foreign songs that I couldn't understand, but after I heard Infinite's songs a couple of times, they got stuck in my head. It was like they were on replay in my head. That was when I noticed that the language barrier was definitely not a problem for me. So I started researching other groups and entertainment companies. Now I am hooked. Trust me, there is no way out and I'm not complaining. I love it."

FAN CREDENTIALS: Eya reports having an amazing time at the Silver Springs, Md. show from Infinite's "One Great Step" tour, back in November. "The Infinite show was amazing," she said. "We sang happy birthday in Korean to [Infinite rapper] Dongwoo who was celebrating his birthday. It was a memorable experience for me." Eya ended up meeting all seven members of Infinite at the show, but it was her interaction with vocalist L that held the most significance. "He was the one that introduced me to the world of K-pop," she said. "He is so handsome and his talent is exceptional. It was one of the happiest days of my life and I will cherish that moment forever. I haven't been to any other K-pop shows, but I am always on the look out for them."

WHAT MOST AMERICANS DON'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT K-POP: "I think the language barrier is the problem," Eya said. "Most people don't like trying new things. That was the case with me at first, but I think we should all keep an open mind and appreciate K-pop and give the artists the respect and recognition that is due."

FAVORITE GROUP: Super Junior

WHY SUPER JUNIOR IS SUPERB: "My favorite K-pop group of all-time is Super Junior," Eya said. "I love and respect Super Junior because of their achievements, hard work, perseverance, determination, and talent. They are the most talented K-pop idols to me and the most versatile. From being comedic actors to hosting television shows to being radio DJs, there is nothing my boys can't do. I will always stand by them no matter what. Super Junior is the perfect example of what K-pop is and how it can break down all language barriers." The 23-year-old identifies herself as both a SUJU and an ELF, both terms for Super Junior fans.

BEST SUPER JUNIOR SONG: "No Other"

"It was their first Super Junior song I ever listened to and it made me fall in love with them," she said.

FAVORITE SOLO ARTIST: Seo In Guk

"Seo In Guk became well-known after winning [the reality singing competition] 'Superstar K' in 2009," Eya said. "But I fell in love with this guy after watching [the South Korean drama] 'Reply 1997' and especially after listening to the show's soundtrack. He is a true example of not giving up on your dreams and he inspires me. He wanted to be a singer since he was 10, but he was rejected from most entertainment agencies because of his weight. But he never gave up."

FAVORITE SEO IN GUK SONG: "All For You" featuring Eunji of A Pink

ARTIST TO WATCH: Exo

"Exo reminds me of Super Junior," Eya said. "They are really talented kids who have undergone intense training. They are great dancers and singers and also very good in variety shows, which I really love. They have started making history by being the first group to sell a million copies of their album in Korea in 12 years. Exo will continue making history and we should all keep an eye out for them."

FUTURE PLANS: "After my graduate studies, I plan to move to South Korea," she said. "I am proud of who I am. I am the biggest K-pop fan."
