First Picture of Finnick Odair from 'The Hunger Games', Is Sam Claflin Hot Enough?

One of the biggest difficulties of adapting a novel into a feature film is casting actors who fit the image of a certain character. Authors will, of course, provide descriptions of their characters in their books, however, that image often varies depending on the imagination of the reader. 

In Suzanne Collins' wildly successful Hunger Games trilogy, Finnick Odair is described as a 24-year-old man whose beauty rivals the Greek god Adonis. Odair has a tanned, muscular physique, bronze hair, and mesmerizing sea-green eyes. Back in 2009, when it was first announced that the novels would be adapted into films, many fans thought this role would be uncastable.

After months of secrecy, we finally get the first glimpse of Odair in Entertainment Weekly's preview issue of the highly anticipated Catching Fire, the sequel to the 2012 blockbuster hit The Hunger Games. Odair is played by 26-year-old English actor Sam Claflin, who recently stared in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Not surprisingly, some fans are already voicing their displeasure over the casting choice. The general consensus seems to be that Claflin is hot, but nowhere near hot enough to portray Odair. "I personally don't think he is hot ENOUGH to be Finnick," said Macey, a fan of the trilogy. "He's hot, sure, just not the 'Finnick hot' impression you get from reading the book." Another fan named Pilar wrote, "While Sam Claflin is a very good looking man, he was soo [sic] not 'it' for the role of Finnick." However, she did admit that Claflin's acting skills may make up for his "physical dissimilarity from the book's character because looks aren't everything."
