Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone Like ‘Romeo And Juliet’ In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ Garfield Says; Introducing Mary-Jane Would Ruin Romance

Andrew Garfield spoke about the romance between his character and Emma Stone's in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," where they take their off-screen relationship to the big screen as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.

Garfield talked to Yahoo! Movies at 2013 San Diego Comic-Con about Peter and Gwen's relationship, comparing the epic romance to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet."

He gave insight as to why the director decided to cut Mary-Jane from the sequel, and effectively firing Shailene Woodley.

"In the sense of storytelling, it didn't quite make sense to introduce another girl. The idea neutralizes the budding and growing relationship between Gwen and Peter. There's a reason why when Shakespeare wrote "Romeo and Juliet," after Romeo met Juliet, he didn't introduce another attractive female character that could be a shoulder to lean on. You know what I mean? After wherever he gets banished to, you know?" Garfield said, laughing.

"Dramatically it just unfortunately didn't really match up with what our story needed to be," he added.

Andrew noted that it was a shame fans wouldn't be able to see the scenes with Shailene as Mary-Jane.

"But yes, it's a bummer - I'll go on record and say it's a bummer that those scenes won't be seen because she just killed it and she was perfect," he said, referring to her work as "beautiful."

Garfield also talked about Woodley's personality: "She is not only an incredibly talented, gifted actress with great craft but also she's one of the better people you'll meet."

Andrew and Emma started dating in 2011, where they met on the set of the first "Spider-Man" movie.
