"Twerk" Bounces Into The Oxford Dictionary, And It's All Miley Cyrus' Fault... Plus "Selfie," "Bitcoin," Phablet

"Twerking" has now bounced its way into the dictionary. Yes, really. And it's probably all Miley Cyrus' fault.

Twerking, the dance move that originated in the United States' hip-hop scene, has made its way into Britain's Oxford Dictionary, alongside a host of other modern words, like selfie and Bitcoin.

Sure, Miley Cyrus displayed her twerk skills at Monday's MTV Video Music Awards...but it's not official until it's in the dictionary.

And now it is. The word has been addedto its publications under the entry: ''Twerk, verb.''

Where did twerk come from? Oxford Dictionaries' Katherine Connor Martin said "twerking" has been around for twenty years.

''There are many theories about the origin of this word, and since it arose in oral use, we may never know the answer for sure,'' Martin said. ''We think the most likely theory is that it is an alteration of work, because that word has a history of being used in similar ways, with dancers being encouraged to 'work it.' The 't' could be a result of blending with another word such as twist or twitch.''

Other words added include "phablet," for a phone-tablet hybrid; "selfie," which describes bad Smarthone self-portraits; and "Bitcoin,'' for the nationless electronic currency that emerged on Silk Road and other semi-legal druggy websites.

However, the historically-focused Oxford English Dictionary, thankfully, likely won't add "twerk" to its hallowed pages any time soon.

There is some justice in the world.
