Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones Split But No Divorce Yet: Cancer Battle And Bipolar Disorder Stress Out Couple

One of Hollywood's celebrated couples, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, has reportedly separated. No divorce papers have been filed yet, but sources close to the couple say that Douglas' recent battle with cancer and Zeta Jones' bipolar disorder proved to be too much stress for the couple.

The official statement from  Zeta-Jones' publicist, Cece Yorke and Douglas' publicist, Allen Burry:  "Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There will be no further comment."

Douglas, 68, had a recent bout with throat cancer. He insinuated that a probable cause of his throat cancer was his sexual practices. It didn't seem to sit well with Zeta Jones. The star of Hollywood classics "Basic Instinct" and "Wall Street" finally overcame his illness in 2011. He just returned from the annual Cannes Film Festival. Douglas was seen recently playing golf and relaxing in a yacht in Sardinia, as cited by the Daily Mail.

Zeta Jones, 43, has sought treatment for her bipolar disorder. She has checked into a mental facility for treatment sometime in 2011 after Douglas' cancer bout. She has sought treatment as recently as April 2013. Her last movie was Steven Soderbergh's "Side Effects."

The couple has stood together through sickness and in health. They have two kids, Dylan (13) and Carys (10).  Most sources close to the couple are confident that they can work things out and that no separation will occur.
