Yahoo! China Closing Down? Company Stops Providing News And Other Services

It seems Yahoo! is still trying to figure out what it can do to stay afloat amidst the competition. Over a decade ago, Google was at worst tolerable enough not to cause too much havoc when driving traffic. Fast forward today and Google now dominates the search and advertising markets, as well as the smartphone industry with its Android platform.

And it seems Yahoo's problems are still far from getting solved.

According to reports by Chinese newspaper Global Times, Yahoo China has ceased to provide any news articles or community services on its website. Instead, a farewell post is showed on the web page, which then redirect its users at now.taobao.com, a website run by Alibaba.

But to clarify things, Yahoo indicated that it is merely 'adjusting its operations' in order to provide its part of the deal with the Chinese company. In 2012, Yahoo agreed to sell a huge portion of its 20 percent stake back to Alibaba, which is probably due to insufficient funds.

Last year, Yahoo finally bid South Korea goodbye, and it would be logical to think that it would do the same in China, which is saturated with both local and international brands.

While Yahoo China will continue to operate with whatever it has, it may be a transition period in order for Alibaba to take over.

A few weeks ago, Yahoo officially terminated its mailing operations in China.
