50 Shades of Grey Cast Final: Fans Complain: Dakota Johnson Not ‘Innocent,’ Charlie Hunnam Not ‘Gorgeous’

After more than a year of speculations, the final cast of the “50 Shades of Grey” movie has been announced. Charlie Hunnam will play Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson will play Anastacia Steele. As expected, there would be mixed reactions but the majority of fans are on the negative.

Charlie Hunnam of “Sons of Anarchy” fame was chosen for the coveted title role. Some of the other candidates for the role were Ian Somerhalder of “The Vampire Diaries” and Matt Bomer of “White Collar.” Henry Cavill of the recent global hit “Man of Steel” was also in the rumor mill, but it is doubtful that he actually auditioned.

Dakota Johnson, daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, was chosen for the role of Anastacia Steele. She was last seen in “Ben and Kate.” Other actresses who were closely associated for the role were Emma Watson, Mila Kunis and Alexis Biedel of “Gilmore Girls”
Were they the right choices? For fans who keenly awaited the decision for more than a year, the initial reaction was disappointment and even anger.

The main complaint was that the actors chosen were not faithful to the descriptions in the book. Anastacia Steele is 21 years old, extremely smart “but has a look of innocence about her.” Dakota Johnson is only 23, but for most fans, she doesn’t have that innocent image.

Criticism is more intense for Charlie Hunnam. Christian Grey is a dark haired, self made billionaire who is “drop dead gorgeous.” The rugged look of Hunnam didn’t seem to fit the bill.
Looking the part is just one aspect. We must be reminded that ultimately, it’s the performance we should judge.
