Walkie Talkie Building Is 'Walkie Scorchie?' Fries Eggs, Melts Cars, Bicycles With Sunlight Reflection; London Skyscraper Causes Heat Damage While Under Construction

The "Walkie Talkie" building, a new skyscraper under construction in London, is reflecting ultra-bright sunlight that is causing damage to cars and bicycles, and can even fry an egg.

One journalist managed to fry an egg with the bright rays reflected off of the Walkie Talkie building, according to The Daily Mail.

USA Today says the heat caused serious damage to a Jaguar XJ parked nearby, according to the British City A.m. newspaper.

The owner of the car, Martin Lindsay, told the publication that the developers of the building "are going to have to think of something. I'm gutted. How can they let this happen."

Lindsay said that he left his car for about an hour on Thursday, and returned to the smell of burning plastic from his Jaguar, USA Today reports.

The Daily Mail reports that the 37-story building under construction in central London has been dubbed the "Walkie Scorchie," due to the complaints from pedestrians and shopkeepers about the heat damage caused by the bright sunlight reflections.

The seat of a bicycle parked near the building was also allegedly singed by the blinding light, the website reports.

According to The Daily Mail, the concave shape of the skyscraper means a large amount of sunlight is reflected into a small area.

The joint developers of the building, Land Securities and Canary Wharf, said they are investigating, USA Today reports.

The Daily Mail reports that a joint statement from developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf said: "The phenomenon is caused by the current elevation of the sun in the sky.

"It currently lasts for approximately two hours per day, with initial modelling suggesting that it will be present for approximately two-to-three weeks.

"As responsible developers we are making every effort to keep local businesses informed and we have communicated with them regularly since the issue first appeared.

'While we investigate the situation further we have liaised with the City of London to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected."
