Kate Upton Graces Vanity Fair Cover Celebrating 100th Anniversary: Photo Pays Homage To Original 1913 Illustration On The Moon

Kate Upton is featured on the Vanity Fair October cover, celebrating the magazine's 100th anniversary. The first edition of Vanity Fair was published in 1913, and Kate Upton's vintage look and pose in the photo pays homage to the original Vanity Fair issue.

In a series of portraits taken by famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, Upton is pictured lounging on the moon in a pose that mimics the original cover illustration of Dress & Vanity Fair from 1 October 1913, The Guardian reports.

On the front cover of the October issue, Kate Upton channels Marilyn Monroe in a champagne-colored retro swimsuit, as she blows out a celebratory candle on a small cake she is holding, to wish the magazine a happy birthday. Her blonde hair rocks a vintage style, paired with red lipstick.

In his Editor's Letter, Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter reflected on the magazine's milestone.

"Magazines have 'bones'-the unchanging elements that give structure to creativity-as surely as gardens and houses do," Carter wrote.

"Today's magazine is different in countless ways from yesterday's-as even the briefest excursion through this issue will show. But I like to think that if [Vanity Fair's first editor] Frank Crowninshield...could see the modern Vanity Fair, stripped of its logo and other identifying marks, he'd know in an instant what he held in his hands," Carter mused, according to Vanity Fair website.

Upton, who became famous after her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover, opened up to the magazine about the difficulties she has faced in the fashion industry.

"I'm not going to name names, but one agency told me, 'You're too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy,'" she revealed. "I was so offended! I've never been so offended! I was like, 'You know that you're in America, right?' And it wasn't 'American models'-it was 'American women are lazy,' period! I feel like a lot of women would disagree with that. A lot!"

Kate Upton has also just been named 2013's Model of the Year, a title she is will receive at the Style Awards in New York, Aceshowbiz.com reports.

The October issue of Vanity Fair will be available on newsstands in New York and L.A. on September 5 and nationally on the iPad, Nook, and Kindle on September 10.
