Emma Stone Replaced By Michelle Williams In ‘Cabaret’ Broadway Play, Cast As Sally Bowles

Emma Stone was originally tapped to play Sally Bowles in the Broadway production of "Cabaret," but Roundabout Theater Company has cast Michelle Williams for the role of Sally Bowles in "Cabaret" instead.

Producers originally hoped Emma Stone, who plays Mary Jane in "The Amazing Spider-Man," would play Sally Bowles, a role made famous by Liza Minnelli in Bob Fosse's 1972 film adaptation, The New York Times reports. However, Emma Stone's representatives said in May that movie commitments prevented her from starring in "Cabaret," the website reports.

The two theater executives who released the news of Michelle Williams' casting spoke on condition of anonymity because Roundabout Theater Company had not yet authorized its announcement.

Williams, 32, is a the three-time Academy Award nominee and former star of the television series "Dawson's Creek." Williams was nominated for an Academy Award in a supporting role for "Brokeback Mountain,"  and later nominated as a lead actress for "Blue Valentine" and "My Week with Marilyn."

If she is indeed cast as Sally, she will make her Broadway debut this season; "Cabaret" is expected to open early 2014, NBC News reports.

Williams would portray an American underground club singer, whose tumultuous life stirs the plot of the play.

Director Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") and co-director and choreographer Rob Marshall ("Chicago") are the creative team behind the coming revival, according to NBC News.
