"Walkie Scorchie" Skyscraper In London's Reflected Rays Scorch Cars, Melts Plastic, Burns Carpet- "Death Ray" Building

The "Walkie Talkie" skyscraper is scorching cars, Londoners say.
The brand-new British building is melting cars and scorching shoes.

The $310 million, 37-sotry "Walkie Talkie" tower in London has thus been dubbed the 'Walkie Scorchie.'

Scaffolding has been erected around the building to protect shoppers. The concave, egg-shaped building is an architectural death ray, many say.

Martin Lindsay blamed the "Walkie Scorchie" for burning his Jaguar XJ.

The bright light reflected off the 'Walkie Talkie' skyscraper has been blamed for scorching cars and melting plastic bottles, even when left for just an hour.

When Lindsay came back to his Jaguar, after just an hour, he smelled burning plastic and saw that the panels of the car were buckled.

"They're going to have to think of something," he said. "I'm gutted. How can they let this continue?"

Parking has been suspended in the areas around the building for the time being.

The carpet of a barber shop nearby also has a burn mark from sunlight reflected from the tower.

Eddie Cannon said his car had been a victim of the "Walkie Scorchie" as well.

"The van looks a total mess - every bit of plastic on the left and everything on the dashboard has melted, including a bottle of Lucozade that looks like it has been baked," he said.

"As a precautionary measure, the city of London has agreed to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected," a spokesman for developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf said in a statement.
