Richard Gere, Wife Divorce: Carey Lowell Third Marriage Ends Due To Different Lifestyles And Gere’s Love Of ‘Solitude’?

Richard Gere and his wife are getting a divorce, according to reports. This will be the third marriage for Richard Gere's wife, Carey Lowell, to end in divorce. What was the cause of their split?

A friend of Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell confirmed that the couple have separated and are heading towards divorce, according to People magazine: "They'll do everything possible to keep things amicable and put their child first."

Richard Gere and his wife have been married for 11 years, and dated for seven years before their 2002 wedding. People magazine reports that the couple have been living apart for some time.

Gere, 64, has been staying at their property in Bedford, N.Y., and Lowell, 52, at their historic mansion in North Haven, N.Y., the New York Post reports.

This is Lowell's third marriage to end in divorce; she was previously married to fashion photographer John Stember, and to actor-director Griffin Dunne, with whom she has a 23-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Gere, who was named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 1999, was previously married to supermodel Cindy Crawford.

A source told Page Six that the divorce may have been triggered by their very different lifestyles. Gere, a devout Buddhist, "likes [his place in Bedford] because it's quiet and he likes the solitude. She likes being in North Haven in the limelight."

Gere and Lowell were last seen together publicly in June at a fundraiser in New York City.

The couple has a 13-year-old son, Homer.

A rep for Gere had no comment.
