iPhone 5S 64 Bit CPU A 'Gimmick', Says Qualcomm Executive

When Apple launched its iPhone 5S in their event last month, it showcased its imrpoved A7 chip that supports 64-bit applications. The event also highlighted that the iPhone 5S' 64-bit CPU would be the standard of upcoming smartphones in the industry. However, an executive from well-known processor manufacturer Qualcomm seems unimpressed.

According to the company's senior vice president and chief marketing officer Anand Chandrasekher, the 64-bit support is 'not relevant' with today's products while stressing the fact that the iPhone 5S only has 1GB of RAM.

"Predominantly... you need it for memory addressability beyond 4GB. That's it. You don't really need it for performance, and the kinds of applications that 64-bit get used in mostly are large, server-class applications. "

However, Chandrasekher also mentioned that it 'just makes sense' to go to that path, particularly because most OS specialists would eventually want that 'at some point in time'.

That means Qualcomm is just taking its time in developing its own 64-bit processor. However, according to Android Authority, the exec's statement may just be a 'marketing gimmick' as well to belittle Apple who became the first company to release such a processor.

Aside from Apple and Qualcomm, other manufacturers which are planning to launch 64-bit processors include Samsung and NVIDIA.
