911 Operator ‘Laughs And Giggles’ When Man Reports Girlfriend On Fire; Should The Operator Be Fired?

A 911 operator laughs when a man in Arizona calls to report that his girlfriend had caught on fire. The operator is still working as a dispatcher. Read the full transcript of their conversation here, including when the 911 operator started to laugh, and what she said was the cause of her laughs.

Lalo Delgado and his girlfriend were on their way to Chiva Falls when they got into a freak accident, according to ABC Tucson affiliate KGUN, The Huffington Post reports. He called 911 to report that both his car and his girlfriend were on fire. To his shock, the 911 operator laughed as he described the situation.

Here's the transcript of their conversation, via The Los Angeles Times:

"My car just kinda caught on fire, my girlfriend caught on fire," Delgado tells the operator.

"Is your girlfriend still on fire?" the operator replies.

Caller: "No."

911: "No?"

(laughter in background)

911: "OK. (chuckles) Umm... Is your vehicle still on fire?"

Caller: "It's hilarious, huh?"

911: "Sir, is your vehicle still on fire?"

Caller: "I just heard you smirk..."

911: "OK, sir it wasn't regarding that, OK."

Caller: "Yeah, I just heard you laugh."

Delgado calls back seeking help and to make sure aid was on the way.

911: "911, what is your emergency?"

Caller: "Yeah."

911: "Hello?"

Caller: "Yeah, I called in a few minutes ago and I just wanted to make sure you took me seriously."

According to The Huffington Post, Pima County Sheriff Capt. Karl Woolridge told NBC Tucson's KVOA that, after an initial investigation, they determined the 911 operator's conduct was inappropriate and that she "had a momentary lapse in professionalism and decorum without question."

Officials are conducting a further investigation, but the 911 operator is still working as a dispatcher. She has not been fired.

It took four hours to get Delgado's girlfriend, who suffered second- and third-degree burns over 40 percent of her body, airlifted to the hospital, the Pima County Sheriff's Department told KVOA.

She is currently recovering from her injuries.
