Adam Wainwright (8-3, 2.31 ERA) threw eight shutout innings in his last start at Kansas City, but emerged with a no-decision when the bullpen faltered in the ninth and Wainwright wound up being charged with two runs. He departed with two on, nobody out and a 2-0 lead, according to MLB.com.

Jake Odorizzi (2-6, 5.31 ERA) was charged with four earned runs in five-plus innings in his last start, vs. Miami, and took the loss, but Jake McGee allowed the go-ahead hit in relief. Odorizzi struck out eight, according to MLB.com.

The slow starts for two teams with postseason hopes and expectations has brought frustration. But optimism remains.

"It's funny, because if you bring in somebody from the outside and have them sit through this [media session], you'd think we're in absolute last place in all of baseball," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said last week. "It baffles me, but also I get it -- because with great expectations, that's where we are.

"In the bigger picture of this game, we're all right."

The Rays, meanwhile, currently own the Majors' worst record and sit in last place in the American League East, facing their deepest deficit -- 14 1/2 games back following Monday's 3-0 loss to the Mariners -- since the end of the 2009 season (19 GB).

The message from Rays manager Joe Maddon has been one of slowly digging back.

"We have to set 50-50 as a goal," Maddon said on Saturday. "That's what I presented to the group [on Thursday]. That would be our short-term goal, not a long-term goal. We've got to start winning series. Two out of three, three out of four. That's how we get back into this thing. We're not going to win 15 games in a row."
