HTC One M8 Review: The Android Flagship That Is 'Almost Perfect'

Months before the HTC flagship was announced, it was already getting great anticipation from both HTC and Android fans, and if you are looking for a decent HTC One M8 review to help you decide, then look no further.

Design and Build

Just like previous HTC flagships, the design and build factor of the HTC One M8 is absolutely stunning. Sure, it looks like the old HTC One M7, from afar, but the brushed metal finish of its aluminum casing is just gorgeous to look at. Unfortunately, the aluminum build may get slippery from time to time so a matte or leather casing would help.

Performance

The HTC One M8 packs an improved Snapdragon 801 chipset, from the Snapdragon 600 of the previous generation. But while the chipset has vastly improved, the clockspeed only tipped slightly higher at 2.3GHz. Compared to other flagships with this chipset, the One M8 lags behind by .2GHz, which should not be noticeable in daily use. Strangely, in spite the lower clockspeed, the HTC flagship is at the top spot in performance when compared to the Galaxy S5, Xperia Z2 and other previous flagship devices.

Camera

A lot of people were disappointed with the One M7's camera - a dismal 4MP UltraPixel shooter that promises great lighting in poorly-lit environments. While it indeed delivers on its promise, it does not fare well against other cameras for other lighting conditions. This is the one mistake HTC did with the M8. Now, it does not get one, but two 4MP UltraPixel shooters, though there is a cool feature wherein the Duo Camera allows a secondary sensor to measure depth. But even that feature cannot save the HTC One M8 from being overtaken by other flagships around. Thankfully, there is a 5MP front cam for selfies.

Conclusion

The HTC One M8 is certainly the best smartphone coming out of the Taiwanese manufacturer, but its one and only setback is too much that it becomes a factor wherein flagships are compared. But if you are looking for the best build factor in the Android smartphone business, then the HTC flagship is certainly worth checking out.
