NBA Rookies 2014: Andrew Wiggins Signs Contract With Cleveland Cavaliers; No Trades For Kevin Love Or Anyone For 30 Days! Chance For Other Teams To Bid

The NBA Rookies of 2014 are officially signing with their teams. It is quite a surprise that the no.1 overall draft choice Andrew Wiggins has been signed just now, 23 days after the start of the signing period.

Obviously, the trade proposal for Kevin Love affected the negotiations, specifically the rule that states that once he's signed, he cannot be traded for 30 days. The Cavaliers were probably trying to execute the trade before signing him. However, the trade has not materialized until now:

The Cavaliers Official Release(nba.com):

"The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed their 2014 NBA Draft picks, Andrew Wiggins and Joe Harris, to contracts, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts. Per league policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

Wiggins was the first overall pick in the June draft. An early entry candidate from Kansas University, Wiggins, 19, was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-League in his only year at Kansas. In 35 contests with the Jayhawks last year, the 6-8, 194-pound guard averaged 17.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 block in 32.8 minutes per game. In four games during the 2014 NBA Summer League, Wiggins averaged a team-high 15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks in 29.9 minutes per game."

There are many implications with this move. One of them is that the Cavaliers have surrendered on the trade being executed. Another possible scenario is that Wiggins' party applied pressure on the Cavs to sign him. Theoretically, Wiggins has no choice on the matter-he cannot transfer teams. However, the idea is that there might be some strained relations because of the delay. If the Kevin Love trade won't happen, having a disgruntled rookie won't help their cause.

Whatever the Cavs' reasons for signing him now, the rules will already apply and Wiggins cannot be traded within 30 days. Minnesota does not seem to be in a hurry (they may even hold on to Kevin Love during the season) but perhaps Cleveland, and LeBron James is. For the other teams, it gives them more time to call Flip Saunders and pull together a package that can somehow trump the Cavaliers' loot bag.
