Team USA Basketball: Derrick Rose Ready To Play For Team USA! With Veteran Players Quitting, Former NBA MVP Assured Of A Spot If Healthy!

Team USA Basketball finally got some good news. After most of their veteran players with prior experience suddenly quit, one of their 2010 veterans may make his much-awaited return donning the Stars n' Stripes!

Derrick Rose, the NBA Most Valuable player of 2011 and the superstar point guard of the Chicago Bulls, has confirmed to join the camp which will be the basis for building the final 12 man lineup.

There were hesitations that he might not join and elect to wait out until the new NBA season starts in October. But Rose has missed competitive basketball for almost two straight seasons, when he got injured again just ten games after his return.

The Chicago Tribune reports:

"Rose on Monday will be one of 18 players at USA Basketball's five-day minicamp in Las Vegas. The week begins the process that will include a three-day August stint in Chicago and culminate with a 12-man roster traveling to Spain for the FIBA Basketball World Cup from late August to mid-September."

It's not as dangerous as it seems. Team USA will probably not be tested until the late rounds and Rose's minutes will be heavily managed, if ever he makes it.

Chicago Bulls head coach and Team USA defensive assistant Tom Thibodeau said: "This is the next step. Derrick has handled every step to this point the right way. The last time he participated in USA Basketball, he followed that with his MVP season (in 2010-11). So we're hoping he can use this time productively."

Rose has a big chance to be chosen because of his prior experience:

"USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo and Krzyzewski typically place a high premium on previous experience in making roster decisions. So the fact Rose played on the 2010 World Championship team that won gold in Turkey is equity that could come in handy."

But he needs to work for it since point guard is a stacked position:

"Still, Rose could be racing rust against elite competition. And the point guard position is stacked even with Russell Westbrook's withdrawal. Golden State's Stephen Curry, Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, Portland's Damian Lillard and Washington's John Wall certainly will test Rose's conditioning."
