Samsung Galaxy S4 Update: Former Android Flagship Set Ablazed Due To Counterfeit Battery; Handset Was Burning Under User’s Pillow [VIDEO]

Samsung Galaxy S4 update: The former Android flagship of Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy S4, was set ablaze because of a battery that was deemed a replacement counterfeit for the handset. The unit was burning under the user’s pillow, who was made aware of it by its smell.

According to Fox 4 News, 13-year-old Ariel Tolfree from Texas found herself rudely awoken in the middle of the night by the smell of her burning phone kept under her pillow.

The handset was a white Samsung Galaxy S4, which was because its battery inside set ablazed. It burned a hole in Tolfree’s pillow but fortunately did not harm the user.

“The whole phone melted, the plastic, the glass you can’t even really tell it was a phone,” says Thomas Tolfree, Ariel’s dad said. He mentioned that the issue could be caused by the phone overheating, causing the battery to swell.

GSM Arena noted that the battery inside was a counterfiet replacement battery and not an original Samsung juice pack. It’s not a new thing to hear about replacement batteries coming from unverifiable and unreliable sources to suddenly set themselves on fire; a real hazard since we keep our phones close to ourselves.

Samsung told Fox 4 News that the Samsung Galaxy S4 owner did something that they warn users and this includes placing an object above the handset that restricts air flow, which could potentially cause fire.

Samsung will be investigating the matter and has offered the young smartphone user a replacement for the handset, the bedding, the mattress and pillow.

The story has garnered great interest on YouTube, with the news cast on the matter already garnering more than 1 million views on the video sharing network after it was posted on July 24.

One commenter named Ken Cheng noted the need to emphasized that using a third party battery was what caused the incident.

“I know it was mentioned in the video but I really think it should be emphasized that she had a 3rd party battery. I'm pretty sure that was a big factor in contributing to the incident.”
