Barclays Premier League: Roma 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool surrendered to a late gained goal by Marco Borriello as their United States got under way with a narrow downfall at Fenway Park, where Fabio Borini suffered a shoulder injury.

The said match headed by a moving tribute to the Liverpool fans that died at Hillsborough, with fans at the Boston Red Sox's stadium observing a minute's silence while 96 red balloons were released into the Massachusetts sky.

The Reds tasted an early blow when striker Borini left the field with a shoulder injury; he was then playing against his former side. And chances were at a premium thereafter, although Rickie Lambert did threaten for his boyhood club, while Francesco Totti shot wide at the other end after being set up by the recent signing from Chelsea Ashley Cole.

Roma almost released a late victory when Antonio Sanabria unleashed a low effort towards the bottom corner but Brad Jones was able to thwart with a one-handed save. Yet, from the resulting corner the former West Ham United striker Borriello, steered a deflected shot in off Daniel Agger to secure a last-gasp win for the Giallorossi.

"It's the second time we've been here and it was a great atmosphere," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. "The supporters gave us great encouragement and made it a really good game."

He added: "It was a game between two Champions League teams, two teams at a good level of pre-season and two sets of committed players."

Rodgers also moved to allay fears over the injury to Borini. "It's not as bad as first thought," he said. "He has had issues with the shoulder before. The X-ray said it's just bruising to keep him out for a few days so thankfully there is no fracture or break. He will miss a few days training and won't train for the remainder of the trip here in Boston. He'll be available again in a few days."

Liverpool: Brad Jones, Martin Kelly (Conor Coady, 65), Martin Skrtel, Sebastian Coates (Daniel Agger, 61), Jose Enrique (Jack Robinson, 46), Lucas, Joe Allen (Jordan Henderson, 77), Coutinho, Fabio Borini (Emre Can, 12), Rickie Lambert (Kristoffer Peterson, 61), Jordan Ibe (Suso, 77).
