However, during certain games and maps, the game may prompt you to buy some in-game cash and coins to upgrade your overall damage, attack speed, and even the health of higher-level MOAB bloons. 

Purchasing is certainly just optional, though it will be slightly more difficult for you to finish certain maps and games.
