'Sonic Highways' Release Date Announced: HBO Rockumentary About Creation Of Foo Fighters 8th Album Directed By Frontman Dave Grohl [VIDEO]

The Foo Fighters and HBO have announced the release date for their collaborative documentary series "Sonic Highways" as October 17.
"Sonic Highways" was recorded in eight historic musical hot spots throughout the country, including Nashville, Chicago, Austin and Seattle. Directed by frontman  Dave Grohl, each one-hour episode of the series will be devoted to one of the musical landmarks the band visits along the way.
According to a press release, the series will "chronicle the history, cultural environment and people defining that city's unique musical identity." Foo Fighters wrote each song on the spot in each city, inspired by the places and people around them. "One song was recorded in each city, every song featuring local legends sitting in, and every lyric written in an unprecedented experimental style: Dave held off on putting down words until the last day of each session, so as to be inspired by the experiences, interviews and personalities that became part of the process," said the statement.
The Foo Fighters got some musical assistance from notable local musicians. Gary Clark Jr., Joe Walsh, Rick Nielsen and more were all reportedly involved in the recording process. There's no word yet when the album will be released, but its a safe bet that it will be the same week as the show's premier.  The resulting album is going to be "epic." Earlier this week, legendary rock producer Butch Vig reported onTwitter that the new Foo album was finished after "23 straight days of mixing."

The eight-episode "Sonic Highways" season release date will be at 11 p.m. EST on Friday, Oct. 17, with following installments to debut in the same release date time slot on subsequent Fridays. Check out a teaser trailer below:
