2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions: Greg Monroe To Take Qualifying Offer, Closes The Door On Pistons! Set To Become Unrestricted Free Agent Next Year!

The 2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions is all but rounded up and the biggest restricted free agent might take himself off the market by taking the dreaded qualifying offer! Greg Monroe proved he wasn't bluffing when he said he wanted out.

Nobody wins with the qualifying offer and it is seen as a last resort for both parties. In that scenario, Greg Monroe has to take an assigned amount that is much lower than market value and play one year for his team. The terms from the Detroit News:

"Monroe is 'definitely' willing to take the one-year qualifying offer worth $5.3 million from Detroit in order to ensure his unrestricted free agency next summer, a source familiar with Monroe's thinking told The Detroit News."

Also among the terms of the qualifying offer is that the Pistons need his consent on any trade. While the team takes him at a discount (Monroe is worth even twice that amount)all the cards shift to Monroe's side after the year when he becomes unrestricted next year.

Of course, Detroit does not want this. Team president and head coach Stan Van Gundy shared:

"We have tried (to recruit Monroe). Look, right off the bat he was the first person we saw. Then a lot of conversation - because that's the way he wanted it for a while - went through his agent and we hooked back up in Orlando (Summer League) and tried to make a strong case for ourselves and our organization."

SVG continues: "I would like to get him long term. I have great respect for him as a person and a player. I think we've tried to make him understand what we're trying to do and why he's an important part of it."

There were reports that the Pistons offered him a 50 million+/4 year offer and another at 60 million/5 years but Monroe debunked those:

"(I) can't reject anything that was not offered to me."

The only risk in taking the qualifying offer is if the player gets injured-hampering his market value in unrestricted free agency. Monroe missed only one out of 310 games and he's confident that there will be offers next year. It's a calculated low risk in his case.
