‘Free! Eternal Summer’ and ‘Sword Art Online II’ Come Out As Top Anime This Summer, ‘Sailor Moon Crystal’ Nostalgia Not Enough?

Anime fans have spoken and dubbed the top two anime of this summer to be "Free! Eternal Summer" and "Sword Art Online II." A list generated by Japanese download site Recochoku polled hundreds of fans and surprisingly found that "Sailor Moon Crystal" didn't even make the top ten.

At the beginning of July, Kotaku released their comprehensive summer anime guide which included the highly anticipated second seasons of virtual reality game thriller "Sword Art Online," and fangirl service heavy "Free!" The biggest buzz however preceding its summer release was for "Sailor Moon Crystal," a remake of the classic magical girl anime that, for some fans, was their introduction to anime in general.

"Free! Eternal Summer" is the second season of "Free!" and has brought all of the same fan service it became famous for and more. Admittedly, it's not a show for the male audience, but nevertheless, its female fans show overwhelming support for the second season.

In the My Anime List forum, fans describe the newest episodes as "solid," "entertaining and exciting," or as one fan puts so eloquently, "but anyway, FREAKEN DIED during the scene with Momotarou and how he fell for Gou just like his older brother!!!"

"Sword Art Online II" equally pleased its male and female fans this summer with its exciting new main virtual reality game, Gun Gale Online and new mysterious character Death Gun. In a pole by Animesuki forum, most fans gave the first episode a 7/10 rating. You can expect this anime to remain a fan favorite as it continues to be simulcast for U.S. fans on Crunchyroll.

Reactions for the reboot "Sailor Moon Crystal" have been mixed if not disappointing. While it certainly continues to be watched by those 90s kids with nostalgia, the remake has come under fire for its simplistic animation style. One commenter on the IGN review for episode 4 exclaims, "What the hell is up with the animation of this show? I mean, it seems to get worse with each episode."

As the summer comes to a close, it looks like there's still a place for action and fan service in anime but without superb animation design it wont make a difference. Both "Free! Eternal Summer" and "Sword Art Online II" are available for stream on Hulu.
