Ebola Virus Outbreak Cure Found? Vancouver-Based Corporation Helped Marburg-Infected Monkeys Recover; Outbreak Expected To Last Six More Months

An Ebola virus outbreak cure might soon be found as Vancouver-based Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation successfully helped several monkeys recover from Marburg virus, a close cousin of Ebola that's as equally deadly.

The findings of the study were published in the Science Translational Medicine journal. The experiment was able to ward off not only the Marburg virus but also cure Ebola hemorrhagic fever.

The corporation is relentless in developing an experimental Ebola virus outbreak cure despite being stopped from using human volunteers earlier this year. The volunteers reportedly underwent adverse reactions specifically fever from the experimental drug.

In the most recent experiment, 16 infected monkeys received the drug. Seven of the monkeys were showing signs of acquiring the Marburg virus. All of the monkeys reportedly recovered as per study leader Thomas Geisbert who's also a microbiology and immunology professor at the University of Texas.

However, five infected monkeys who weren't able to receive the drug became sicker that the researchers were left with no choice but to euthanize them.

Ebola's most severe strains have 90 percent fatality rate. Many patients don't realize that they are already infected as Ebola shows flu-like symptoms at first. High fever, vomiting, and bleeding eventually follow.

Several agencies have issued grants to biotech companies in an attempt to assist them in searching for Ebola virus outbreak cure or even vaccinations.

Meanwhile, medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders believes that the Ebola outbreak could last six more months as hospital beds in West Africa's treatment centers continue to be occupied faster than expected.

"We're running behind a train that is going forward. And it literally is faster than what we're bringing in terms of a response," said the charity's president Joanne Liu as reported by Wall Street Journal.

As of Thursday, 1,975 have been infected whereas 1,069 have died according to the United Nations health agency.
