Charlie Hunnam Confesses ’Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Gave Him A Nervous Breakdown, ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Actor Explains Quitting Sexy Lead Role

Charlie Hunnam is speaking out about the "Fifty Shades of Grey" role that he walked away from late last year.

In a recent interview, the "Sons of Anarchy" actor revealed that starring as Christian Grey in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the E. L. James' best-selling novel gave him "a nervous breakdown."

"I was going to finish Sons [of Anarchy] at like 11 p.m. Friday night, get on a plane Saturday morning to Vancouver for Fifty, missing the whole first week of rehearsal and start shooting Monday morning," Hunnam told Moviefone in the revealing interview.

"And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting Crimson Peak in Toronto. I just had like, frankly, something of a nervous breakdown," confessed the star.

Hunnam added, "I just said, 'I can't...I can't. To fail on such a grand scale-because Fifty's going to be massive, it's going to be huge. I really didn't want to fail on such a grand scale and I just couldn't transition from Jax to Christian Grey in 48 hours."

Around the world, fans of the novel have been following the production of the film with bated breath. The pairing of Hunnam and Dakota Johnson, who will play Anastasia Steele, was debated and criticized and praised. When Hunnam left the project, it was speculated that the actor couldn't handle the pressure of the role.

Hunnam reveals that his departure had more to do with his hectic schedule.

"I bit off more than I could chew and it was painful. I loved the character and I wanted to do it," he confessed.

Hunnam was replaced with another British actor, Jamie Dornan, who recently told GQ Magazine (via Yahoo! Movies) that the "Fifty Shades of Grey" film won't be as explicit as some fans may expect.

"You know it has to be watchable. It can't be hardcore. I wouldn't have signed up to it if it was," said Dornan.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" is scheduled to be released on Valentine's Day, 2015.
