According to Variety, the prospects of a sequel to the movie Zoolander are heating up. It has been more than ten years since Ben Stiller played Derek Zoolander on screen, but Will Ferrell has recently let some details slip about the long-awaited movie continuation.

In the original Zoolander, Will Ferrell played the evil fashion designer Mugatu, whose plan was to brainwash Derek in order to continue using child labor. According to the New York Post, Ferrell told the press that the script to the sequel is now finished, and that his character will be returning. He stated, "We are actually supposed to do a read-through of a sequel script soon, and Mugatu is part of it," revealing his character's reappearance.

While there has been no official confirmation that a sequel is indeed happening, the fact that a script has been finished is exciting. In the past year, Stiller has been spreading the word about the possible sequel; this past June Stiller told journalists that his production company, Red Hour Films, was actively working on a rewrite.

However, not everything went very smoothly, as the script was quite hard to write. This past December, Stiller stated, "There's a script we like, but I don't want to force it, because people who love that movie really love it, so I want to make sure we do the sequel the right way... Mike Myers did it well with the Austin Powers movies - they were all funny, and very 'of their time.' And Zoolander is 'of its time,' too, so it's about how we could bring it up to date, to the present day," revealing some of the hardships encountered while writing the script.

Nevertheless, Stiller recently told reporters, "Yeah, we've got a script for the sequel, and we've just been in talks again... We're trying to sharpen it and hone it and, actually, I don't want to jinx anything, but it looks like it actually might be starting to get up and running," conveying his excitement for the new project.

So far, the loose premise of Zoolander 2 will see Derek and Hansel (Owen Wilson) competing against younger models as an opposing company contends with their business.
