Mojang, Creator Of Minecraft Acquired By Microsoft For A Whooping $2.5 Billion

It was reported last week that the American multinational corporation, Microsoft and Mojang, creator of Minecraft were seriously considering multibillion dollar procurement. This is now made official by the two. Majong, creator of the renowned sanbox building game will now be a part of Microsoft's game studio division. After this deal valued at $2.5 billion comes to a close, Mojang announced that founders, Jakob Porser, Carl Manneh and Markus "Notch" Persson will be leaving.

Considering that Persson had despised Windows Phone in the past, claiming its phone platform to be tiny and not worth developing apps for, this acquisition is somewhat surprising. Nevertheless, Mojang explained the reason behind this move in a blog post:

"As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He's decided that he doesn't want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he's made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He'll continue to do cool stuff though."

In a personal blog post, Persson expressed his sentiments.

Mojang stated that Minecraft is among the best-selling apps for iOS as well as Android and not only that, it's also available on PlayStation consoles, Xbox and PCs too and that there is no reason why they'd stop developing it for more than one platform unless other companies want them to stop. Microsoft, however, has confirmed that the famed app will continue to be developed for multiple platforms.

With more than 54 million copies being sold to date, the renowned game was the reason why the company made a profit of more than $100 million last year. Born in 2009 as a side project, the game has become a cultural phenomenon.

alking about the deal, Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO underlined the popularity of games on both, computers as well as smartphones. He also recognized the dynamic people behind Minecraft. The company assured that it will continue Minecraft as well as its community in ways its loved by the people today. They also committed that they will continue enhancing it in the future.
