According to the official synopsis of "The Storm (1920-1933)," Episode 4 of Season 1, "Teddy's progressive crusade splits the Republican Party. Later, FDR runs for vice president in 1920 and, while his ticket loses, his future appears bright. The next summer, however, a bout with polio leaves him paralyzed from the waist down. Eleanor, meanwhile, builds a personal and political life of her own. In 1928, FDR re-enters politics when he seeks the office of governor of New York. His stewardship of the state during the first years of the Great Depression leads the Democrats to nominate him as their 1932 presidential candidate."

According to the New York Times, "'The Storm (1920-1933),' the fourth installment in Ken Burns's seven-part documentary, finds Franklin D. Roosevelt (the voice of Edward Herrmann) running for vice president in 1920 before contracting polio the next summer. Eleanor (Meryl Streep), meanwhile, builds a political life of her own as her husband struggles - without success - to walk again. He returns to politics in 1928 as governor of New York and earns the Democratic nomination for president in 1932, surviving an assassination attempt and, at his inauguration, telling his countrymen that the only thing they have to fear is 'fear itself.'"
